V tomto týdnu se na FF UK budou konat přednášky Ryana Szpieche z University of Michigan, které ve spolupráci s projektem KREAS a Centrem pro studium středověku organizuje Pražské centrum židovských studií. Ryan Szpiech je romanista, odborník na středověkou literaturu v iberském prostoru a židovsko-křesťansko-muslimskou polemiku, autor knihy Conversion and Narrative: Reading and Religious Authority in Medieval Polemic (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012) a vedoucí editor časopisu Medieval Encounters. In this lecture, I will discuss the first-person accounts of various medieval religious converts including Hermann the Jew, Abner of Burgos, and Anselm Turmeda. I will consider how the basic form of a conversion story—from Paul and Augustine to Bunyon, Rousseau, and Joyce—lends itself to narrative drama, suggesting that autobiography is not just a portrait of the self, but a story of the self’s transformation.

Numerous medieval Jewish writers mention with scorn the presence of Qaraites in the Iberian Peninsula. However, no definitive evidence of their presence has survived. This talk will examine one account of their disappearance: the legend of the forced conversion of Qaraites by Rabbanites told by Jewish convert Abner of Burgos. A reading of the account in context shows that the story serves to encourage conversion within the Jewish community by representing “turning” as a natural and recurring phenomenon in Jewish life.
